Values & Decision Making I: What's Important To You In Relationships?
Estimated Time: 20 Minute
Procedure:
- Explain:
- People have values about all sorts of things.
- Values help us decide priorities and what's important about life, including relationships.
- Values can serve as a personal guidance system (like a GPS locator!) for making healthy decisions we can be happy with.
- Values are a personal thing and do not come with right and wrongs.
- That said, there are some values that we, as a society, have agreed to and written into our laws and constitution.
- Articulating values is not an easy task
- Most often, we learn our values in very subtle ways. No one says: "Hey you, listen up. This is a value I want you to learn and adopt."
- Many times we may not have a clear idea of what we think or value until a situation leaves us feeling uncomfortable or hurt.
- This is an opportunity to figure out our values so we can use them in a proactive manner, which is why we've designed this workshop. (Refer to background notes for more information.)
- Explain that the next activity involves thinking about some questions individually. It's important that everyone be as honest as possible and write down exactly what they feel. They will only have to share what they want to share with the group.
- Hand out a What I Value In Relationships worksheet to each participant. Explain that the next activity is meant to help people get a better sense of some of their values about relationships. Ask what is a relationship? Ensure that the participants know that a "relationship" is simply having a connection to another person and is not only about romantic or sexual relationships. People have lots of different kinds of relationships involving friends, family, teacher-student, etc.
- Ask if anyone would like to share some of the qualities they value in relationships. Be prepared to share some of your own.
- Ask how someone could recognize these qualities in a relationship? What would people be doing or saying to express these qualities?
