Values & Decision Making II: Using Values To Guide Your Decisions

Estimated Time: 20 Minutes

Procedure:

1. Explain that during the next activity, participants will be divided into small groups. Each group will be given a picture from a magazine that depicts a relationship. Discuss the following questions with your group:

What's happening in this situation? (The participants should create a story of what they think is happening.)
What does each character in the picture want?
Give each character a set of 4 core values based on the situation and what they want.
What are some ways this situation could be handled? (The participants should look for solutions.)
Which of these would lead to the best health outcomes?
How would these solutions fit with each character's values?
Which of these would be most in line with your green light?
What might be some of the challenges in choosing the decision that is most in line with your green light?
What might be some of the benefits in choosing the decision that is most in line with your green light?

2. Have small groups report back to the larger group about their scenario and the highlights of their discussion.

3. Ask: Where can we get support to help us make decisions that are both healthy and in line with our values? (Examples: parents, school counsellors, peer helpers, youth workers at community centres, youth clinics, Kids Help Phone, Facts of Life Line, www.planetahead.ca)

4. Handout youth resource cards, Got Questions? Want Answers? These wallet-sized cards may be modified to provide local resource information.
