Many broad social issues influence sexual decisions and behaviours. This section highlights some key social issues, namely gender stereotypes, homophobia and heterosexism, intercultural sensitivity, the media, and adolescent development.
There are several groups in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia that focus on these issues. You may want to consider having Condomania visit your class to discuss gender, Gab Youth Services to discuss homophobia and heterosexism, your local immigrant service society to discuss inter-cultural awareness and competency, and community health nurses or youth workers to discuss adolescent development. Other training modules on these subjects are also available. This is an appropriate time to expose teens in training to the aspects of the workshop modules that directly deal with these themes.
