Peer Education Skills: Overview

Effective group facilitation, communication, and leadership are the foundations of effective peer education. It is important that youth have the skills to interpret the educational objectives of the workshops and activities so they are able to animate the outlines in the class.

It is recommended that youth leaders receive training and opportunities to develop these skills before facilitating workshops for their peers. These skills are transferable across a range of community involvement opportunities. This resource does not provide activities focused on these foundation skills, as there are many resources and programs specifically geared to this.

The following activities are best done near the end of the training program, specifically after the teen health educators have been exposed to the other learning areas such as human sexuality and health promotion. This will allow the teen health educators the opportunity to apply their knowledge across a variety of training areas.
