Human Sexuality: Sex Graffiti
Learning Objective: Participants will explore how society views "sex" and what factors make sexual decisions healthy or unhealthy.
Resources:
Time: 30 minutes
Materials: Sheets of flipchart paper, markers and tape
Procedure:
- Post 3 sheets of flipchart paper around the room. Write one of the following on each flipchart: "Sex is.", "Healthy reasons for having sex are.", "Unhealthy reasons for having sex are.".
- Divide into three small groups. Assign each group to a sheet of flipchart paper and have them brainstorm for 5 minutes.
- Have each small group report back, starting with the "Sex is." group.
- At the end of the "Sex is." session, brainstorm. Ask:
- What do you notice about the activities listed here?
- Are any activities missing?
- There is a tendency for people to think that sex is only vaginal or anal sex, and to minimize digital and oral sex as "not real" sex. Why do you think this is? What are some of the dangers associated with this limited definition?
- At the end of the "Healthy reasons." and "Unhealthy reasons." sessions, ask:
- What is common among the reasons listed as healthy? (Most often, it is that these are decisions made by the people for themselves.)
- What is common among the reasons listed as unhealthy? (Most often, it is that these decisions are made to please another person or to meet an external pressure.)
- Hand out Basic Glossary of Sexual Terms. For a full glossary refer to http://www.iwannaknow.org/glossary/index.html, a website developed by Alberta educators on teaching sexual health.
- Emphasize that sexual preferences are much like vegetable preferences: not all people like the same things. Some people are even grossed out by some things. What's important is to focus on health risks.
