Human Sexuality: Healthy Sexuality Mapping Facilitators Notes
Learning Objective: Participants will define the qualities of a sexually healthy person and the forces that can influence people's ability to be sexually healthy.
Resources:
Materials:
Procedure-Stage 1:
- Explain that this is an individual activity that explores thoughts and feelings about sexuality, as well as the factors that influence teen sexuality. There are no rights or wrongs. Pictures will not be shared with the whole group. Participants need include only what they feel comfortable with.
- Give each participant a half sheet of flipchart paper and some markers.
- Have participants draw a person in the middle of the sheet to represent him/herself. Inside this person, have participants write words to describe their own thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values, etc. about dating, sex, and sexuality, particularly about what is right for them.
- Have participants draw a "shadow" outline around their "inner person," leaving about 4 inches of space. This shadow is meant to represent the messages they get from the outside world about teen sexuality and how teens should "be" when it comes to sex. These messages can be represented by how they draw the outline and also by the words that are written along the edge of the shadow.
- Have participants think about how they feel and think about themselves and their sexuality in relation to messages they receive from the outside world. (Do the messages from their self and the outside world match up? What are some of the feelings that these messages bring up?) Have them write words or draw symbols to describe these thoughts and feelings.
- Have participants draw a box around their figure about 3 inches away from the edge of the paper. On the outside of the box, write down where these messages come from.
- Have participants think about why people (including themselves) choose to follow these messages: what are some ways people are rewarded for following certain messages and punished for not following other messages? This information should be written along the inside edge of the box to represent a boundary.
- Have participants think about where they can find support to make the decisions that they truly feel are right for themselves. What are some ways that they can contribute to a supportive environment for themselves and their peers? Put this information in the space around their person and its shadow.

Procedure - Stage 2:
- Ask the participants:
- Was there anything that surprised you during this activity?
- What are some of the top things that influence people's sexual behaviour?
- What in our environment makes it difficult for people to make the kinds of sexual decisions they are comfortable with?
- What in our environment facilitates making the kinds of sexual decisions teens are comfortable with?
- What are some ways to strengthen the supports teens have for making healthy decisions?
- Give each participant the Healthy Sexuality Flower handout. Review the components of this model with the participants.
- Handout youth resource cards, Got Questions? Want Answers? These wallet-sized cards may be modified to provide local resource information.
