Human Sexuality: Body Part Graffiti
Learning Objectives: Participants will explore the feelings, beliefs, and attitudes associated with the sexualized parts of the human body.
Resources:
Time: 30 minutes
Materials: Sheets of flipchart paper, markers, and tape
Procedure:
- Post 5 sheets of paper around the room. Label the sheets: vagina/vulva, penis, breasts, anus, and neck.
- Divide participants into 5 smaller groups. Assign each group to a sheet of paper. Have each group brainstorm all the words (synonyms) they know for that part of the body. After about 2 minutes, rotate the groups. Continue this until each group has visited each sheet.
- Bring the participants back together to examine the 5 sheets. Ask:
- What do you notice about the words on the different sheets?
- Are some of the words used to describe certain body parts more offensive than others? Why? What does it say about how we view these parts of the body?
- What kind of images do the words used for the male anatomy raise? Female? What does this say about how we view males and females?
- Why are there no or few slang words for neck?
- What do the words tell you about how sexuality is perceived?
- Emphasize:
- The unofficial language used for these body parts can be divided into three categories: kids' language (peepee, weewee); vague references (down there); "dirty" words.
- The words we learn from our families and culture for these parts of the body teach us a lot about the beliefs and values surrounding sexuality. If we are taught that these parts should be brushed over, referred to as dirty, etc., we learn that sexuality is something shameful.
- These words also tell us a lot about how male and female sexuality is viewed in society. Male sexuality tends to be celebrated and seen as powerful. Female sexuality tends to be discouraged and seen as dangerous. Indeed, many of the words used to describe women's bodies are also used as insults.
