Health Promotion: Overview

Supporting teens in adopting healthy behaviours is more complicated than simply telling them about possible consequences and how to avoid them. Individual decisions and behaviours do not happen in a vacuum. There are many personal and social factors that influence decisions and choices.

To be effective in their role, teen health educators must be aware of the complex process involving behaviour change. They also have to be ready to meet their younger teen audience at the audience's level, not where the educators may want them to be. They can then work with their audience to reduce the level of harm associated with behaviours, while also building healthier behaviours.

This section will foster an understanding of these issues and encourage greater empathy and a nonjudgmental approach.
