Resource Development

The Parkgate Youth Sexual Health Project was initiated in the spring of 2003, when peer counsellors from Seycove Secondary Community School, in the Seymour area of North Vancouver, approached local youth workers to provide them with training in sexual health.

The youth workers approached the school's community health nurse to provide support for this idea. Their plan was to educate teens on risk-taking sexual behavior, unwanted pregnancies, increased chlamydia rates, and HIV/AIDS, as well as to increase awareness for youth at risk, and understanding of the misinformation on these topics. Parkgate Community Health Centre submitted a proposal to the BC Centre for Disease Control and received funding for the project in August 2003.

These resources were developed in collaboration with peer counsellors (aged 16-18), youth workers, a school counsellor, and health professionals. The peer counsellors first gathered information about youth sexuality from their younger peers through a community consultation or mapping process. This information served as the foundation for the development of the modules in the resources on this website.
